Ugandan Scholar and Activist Announced as Keynote for International Health Conference at UW

The Western Regional International Health Conference Student Commitee is pleased to announce the keynote speaker is Stella Nyanzi, PhD, with the Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Her current research is focused on the politicization of sexuality in contemporary Uganda – with an emphasis particularly on unpacking mainstream religious framing of and contestations about sexual citizenship. Established in 2007, the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health (DGH) seeks a visionary leader to become the Department Chair and recipient of the William H. Foege Endowed Chair in Global Health. Under the leadership of King Holmes, MD, PhD, the founding chair, our outstanding department has over 300 faculty, 470 students and fellows with 743 projects in 114 countries. Department a Finalist for Leaders in Health Care Awards

The Department of Global Health is a finalist for Washington’s 2014 Leaders In Health Care Awards sponsored by Seattle Business. The Department was nominated in the global health category. The awards will be announced Feb. 24 to an audience of 300 health care executives and practitioners. This year, UW Medicine has a record six finalists for these awards.

Assoc. Chair Stephen S. Gloyd to Present University Faculty Lecture Feb. 6

Stephen S. Gloyd, MD, MPH, Professor of Global Health and of Health Services, will present the 38th Annual University Faculty Lecture, "Achieving Health for All in the 21st Century: Globalizing, Growing Inequality and Creative Response" on February 6 at at 7:00 p.m. in Kane Hall. Country Ownership Requires Public Health Sector Health System Strengthening (Letter to The Lancet)

Prof. Scott Barnhart, MD, MPH, and Assoc. Prof. Amy Hagopian, PhD, MHA, joined a discussion on the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and transitioning to individual government ownership of HIV/AIDS efforts. They argue that this requires further local health system strengthening "of Marshall Plan proportions," stating, "to sustain care, countries are better served by a rapid scale-up in public-sector health system strengthening.

New Fogarty Fellowship in Peru to Establish Center for Innovation in Global Health

The KUSKAYA project presented jointly by the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru and the University of Washington in Seattle, was one of five projects in 2013 that received funding from the Fogarty International Center to establish a training program and Center for Innovation in Global Health to employ an interdisciplinary approach for understanding complex health problems, emphasizing leadership, business models, policy analysis and implementation science. KUSKAYA means "working together" in Quechua, a Peruvian native language.

Design Corps Picks UW Project in Peru as One of Six Public Interest Global Design Winners

Design Corps picked a UW project in Peru, Comunidad Ecologica Saludable (Healthy Ecological Community), as one of six Public Interest Design Global winners. Applicants came from 28 countries. This is the sixth design award for the project headed by Assoc. Prof. Ben Spencer (Landscape Architecture), and Prof. Susan Bolton (Environmental and Forest Sciences) to create a green space in the desert community of Puente Piedra, Peru.
