Pamela Collins, advocate for mental health and community voice, named 2023 MLK Service Awardee

UW School of Public Health

Pamela Collins is the 2023 recipient of the MLK Community Service Award. Given annually by the UW Health Sciences schools and UW Medicine Office of Healthcare Equity, this award honors individuals or groups who exemplify Martin Luther King, Jr.’s principles.

Dr. Pamela Collins, professor of global health and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, is featured.

UW Experts Explain Why Russian Invasion of Ukraine, Armed Conflict is a Public Health Problem

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 created a largescale humanitarian crisis that is intensifying as the conflict persists. Millions of Ukrainians, mostly women and children, have fled the country in what the United Nations calls the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. Tens of thousands of people still in the country are finding themselves without access to food, water, power, or heat.

We live in a developing country when it comes to mental health, one of the most neglected areas of health in the world. That’s the conclusion of a Lancet Commission on global mental health that I helped author. I’m one of 28 commissioners from around the world who wrote the report, declaring a crisis of inaction. Globally, our responses to mental health needs are woefully insufficient.
