From the thousands of undergraduate students at the University of Washington, three are selected each year for the prestigious President’s Medalist Award.
Global Health Minor student Nuria Alina Chandra was named a medalist for 2019–20, along with Sam Colgan and Natasha Lavides. All three recipients are passionate about their chosen areas of study, and were selected by a committee for their high GPAs, rigor of classes and number of Honors courses.
A core tenet of the Department of Global Health’s mission is understanding the causes of health inequities at multiple levels, including ways that health intersects with other pressing issues facing the global population. For David Frantz, a third-year undergraduate student in the University of Washington Global Health minor, that meant exploring ways that health can be weaved together with his other academic interests.
The second annual Husky 100 recognizes outstanding UW undergraduates and graduate students from Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma in all areas of study who are making the most of their time at the UW.
This year's cohort of 100 students includes three global health students and alumni:
Jeremy Taiwo is one of 550 people competing this year on the U.S. Olympic team. The games get underway Friday night in Rio. Based in Seattle, and a former student of Latin American studies and global health at the University of Washington, Taiwo will be competing in the decathlon, one of the most physically challenging events of the Olympics. Athletes must perform in ten different track and field events, including running, jumping, pole vault, javelin, and discus.
