Named after King Holmes, PhD, MD, Professor of Medicine and Global Health, and founding chair of the Department of Global Health, the King K. Holmes Endowed Professorship in STD and AIDS is a rotating award designed to recognize and support a faculty member with exceptional capability and promise, and a clear commitment to STD/HIV research and training. Starting next year, the professorship will be awarded for a period of three years, renewable once.
Dr. Peter Piot held the first visiting appointment in 2016, and the current visiting professor is Elizabeth Bukusi, MPH, MD, PhD, PGD (Research Ethics), Masters in Bioethics, CIP, FAAS, who recently presented “Turning the tap off: HIV prevention and care – with limited resources – what works” at the School of Medicine Grand Rounds.
Dr. Bukusi received her PhD and MPH at the UW. Her mentors were Dr. Holmes and David A. Eschenbach, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
