• Peter Cherutich, Gilbert S. Omenn Award for Academic Excellence (PhD), School of Public Health. Peter was nominated for his outstanding achievement within the public health community. He is the first graduate of the Doctoral Program in Global Health: Metrics and Implementation Science. He has dedicated his research to measuring the impact of HIV prevention interventions on HIV incidence and survival. His work as Kenya’s Deputy Head, National AIDS/STD Control Programme, will continue to develop future global health leaders and scientists in Africa.
• Nicole Ide, University of Washington 2015 Distinguished Thesis Award (Social Sciences category).
• Biraj Karmacharya, Tobacco Scholars - Tobacco Studies Program. The scholars will pursue opportunities for education and training in tobacco prevention, research, treatment and policy. Read more. He was also appointed co-director of the new Nepal Studies Initiative at the Jackson School. He hopes the program will advance collaboration between UW and Nepal in different fields, including public health.

Department of Global Health, Silver Award, Outstanding Global Health Organization, Seattle Business' Leaders in Health Care Awards. 
Everyone can contribute to solving health care problems, according to the UW Department of Global Health, which brings together talent across many campus disciplines. Science and engineering students are finding ways to harvest fog for clean water in Peru. Computer scientists explore how big data analysis can shed light on worldwide disease. Business students aid efforts at global social entrepreneurship. Only imagination limits what many praise as the most collaborative program in the country.

White House Champion of Change Award
DGH graduate Mohamed Ali, MPH, received the White House Champion of Change Award.  Ali is the co-chair of the King County Somali Health Board, an organization he helped establish to improve communications between the Somali immigrant community, health care providers, and local health agencies.

Partners PrEP Study Team awarded University of Washington Distinguished Staff Award
Partners PrEP study team, Mira Emmanuel-Ogier, Harald Haugen, Ting Hong, Lara Kidoguchi, Meighan Krows, Susan Morrison, Dana Panteleeff and Kathy Thomas, received the University of Washington Distinguished Staff Award. The team successfully served as the core operations for a large and very complex HIV prevention study in Africa. They achieved extremely high recruitment, retention and data quality while implementing a complex medical trial. And they shepherded a new product for HIV prevention through regulatory approval, all while based here at the UW.

Puente Piedra Project Wins 3 Design Awards
Students from multiple disciplines have worked with residents of a mega-slum in Lima, Peru, called Puente Piedra, through The Puente Piedra Project: Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities. As UW students and faculty worked with the community, they learned that residents had a great desire for green space, so students helped residents of the Lomas de Zapallal community of about 27,000 people plan and transform a barren, sandy hillside into a park with walkways, trees, plants, and shrubs. Technical assistance included designing a system to recycle water from a handwashing station and pipe it to the park for irrigation. The project won three international design awards in 2012*, including the Social Economic Environmental Design (SEED) Award for excellence in public interest design. The project also won the 2012 Environmental Design Research Association Great Places Design Award and the 2012 American Society of Landscape Architects Community Service Honor Award.

Mental Health Partnership in Nairobi
The University of Nairobi received a Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI)-linked award focused on research training in mental health. This three-year award, led by Dr. Muthoni Mathai from the University of Nairobi and Dr. Jurgen Unutzer from the University of Washington, builds upon the nearly 30-year research training collaboration between UW and the University of Nairobi. Dr. Deepa Rao is the UW program director.
The University of Nairobi (UON) has two other MEPI awards with the Department of Global Health, one which focuses on improving medical education and retention of doctors in Kenya and another linked award which focuses on maternal, newborn, and child health. Both awards are in their third year of funding.
This new mental health linked award aims to improve mental health research capacity by training University of Nairobi faculty and postgraduates and by establishing a Mental Health Resource Center to support these efforts at UON. UW faculty will be providing in-person training, distance learning courses and mentorship. This exciting interdisciplinary award came out of ongoing conversations in the Department of Global Health’s Global Mental Health Group and is one of the first collaborations between the Department of Global Health and the Department of Psychiatry.

Mobile Moms Chosen by Young People Looking for a Cause
The Seattle organization Health Alliance International at UW, which launched a Mobile Moms text messaging service aimed at improving maternal health in Timor-Leste, was the beneficiary of the funds raised by a party July 14 at McCaw Hall by a group of young people called Agency. Ticket sales were about $40,000.

UW Course on Clinical Management of HIV Wins Global Health Prize
A UW graduate course in HIV has been awarded a global health prize that recognizes the most original project conducted to alleviate poverty-related chronic and/or infectious disease in the last year. The course, Global Health 573 “Clinical Management of HIV,” received the Velji Award for Global Health Project of the Year Nov. 15 at the Consortium of Universities for Global Health conference in Montreal.  The course is directed by Nina Kim, UW assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Since 2007, Global Health 573 has delivered free HIV training to more than 1,000 health professionals and has been webcast in 21 countries with the technical assistance of Treatment Research and Expert Education, a training program of the Department of Global Health established by Michael Chung, UW assistant professor of medicine and global health and international course director. Most of the distant students have been health professionals from countries in Africa, India, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The course also has led to several new partnerships with medical schools in Ethiopia and South Africa as well as with hospitals in resource-constrained settings, with the goal of fostering medical education and on-site HIV clinical mentorship.
The course organizers will receive a plaque, as well as $1,000 to support ongoing volunteer global health activities. 

UW Leads NIH-Funded Consortium to Train Global Health Researchers 
The UW is one of five consortia of colleges and universities to receive funds from the National Institutes of Health to help foster the next generation of global health scientists. The Fogarty Global Health Program for Fellows and Scholars program is building a network of U.S. academic institutions to provide early career physicians, veterinarians, dentists and scientists with a significant mentored research experience in a developing country. Joseph Zunt, associate professor in global health and the principal investigator for the UW-led consortium, said the grant will provide new opportunities for training 12-15 U.S. and international doctoral students and post-doctoral trainees each year in international settings. 

UW Students Find Spiders with Potential to Combat Malaria
UW seniors Christine Scullywest, Adam Tanaka, and Roshan Mahoney were recently among three first-place finishers in the Washington Global Health Alliance’s Be the Change student competition, thanks to their research proposal of employing the Evarcha culicivora spider to control malaria-spreading mosquitoes. The spiders are natural predators of female mosquitoes, which carry the malaria virus.
