Dr. Mabuka-Maroa works under the programmatic arm of the African Academy of Sciences, Nairobi, Kenya that focuses on improving the research and development landscape on the African continent. She is responsible for the management of the Human Heredity and Health in Africa programme and the development of an Open Database for African Clinical Trials Capabilities and Sites. Previously, she spent 16 years doing HIV-1 clinical research focused on correlates of protection in mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1. She holds a PhD from the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health and spent 3 years as a postdoctoral fellow with the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard and KwaZulu Natal Research Institute for TB and HIV (KRITH). She is currently a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle and a 2018 Aspen New Voices Fellow.
