Where did you live before coming to UW and/or where are you from originally?
I come from Tajikistan and worked and volunteered there before coming to UW.
What is your background in public health/global health?
With a background primarily in policy, security, and advocacy, I collaborated with local NGOs to promote equal access to Public Health care, focusing on marginalized communities in Tajikistan. While researching the geopolitics of drug trade in Central Asia and Afghanistan, and working with public health activists, I realized that much of my work was interconnected with Public Health. As a result, I became interested in pursuing a master's degree in the field, and here I am!
Why did you choose to get your MPH in global health at the UW?
Getting to the University of Washington was quite a journey. My scholarship program supervisor convinced me to explore the Global Health program, and it turned out to be the best decision I've ever made.
What has the cohort experience been like for you?
The sense of community that has emerged within my cohort has been nothing short of exceptional. From the very beginning, everyone has been welcoming and supportive, creating a safe space where we can learn and collaborate. Through group projects, cultural events, and discussions, I have been able to hear from a diverse range of individuals with unique experiences and backgrounds, which has enriched my understanding of different cultures and ways of thinking.
What do you enjoy most about Seattle?
I have to say that I enjoy so many things about this vibrant city. One of the things that stands out to me the most is the incredible natural beauty surrounding Seattle. With its stunning waterfront, lush green forests, and breathtaking mountain ranges, Seattle offers endless outdoor recreation and adventure opportunities. Coming from a small mountainous country, the sense of community and belonging I have experienced here has been remarkable, making Seattle feel like a second home to me.
What advice do you have for students interested in applying to the program?
When considering the Global Health program, conducting thorough research can be incredibly helpful in ensuring that the program is aligned with your academic and career aspirations. Take the time to review the program's curriculum, faculty, and resources to determine if it's the right fit for you. Don't hesitate to reach out to faculty members for guidance because they have been invaluable in supporting me since the very beginning of my application process.
As a newcomer to Public Health myself, I've found it helpful to identify areas where I needed improvement and take action to strengthen my skills. Despite the program's challenging nature, it offers extensive support and guidance to help you succeed and navigate through the coursework. Although the University of Washington may not be the ideal fit for everyone, I firmly believe that choosing this program will be a wise and fulfilling decision for students.
