With recent changes in the UWSOM curriculum, we have adjusted GHP course (NCS) requirements to work toward parity for WWAMI region students' access to GHP-approved courses. Use the following guide to find the course credit requirement for your entering year.

E-17 and later: Complete 2 credits G H prefix courses; additional credits optional.

Eligible Courses - Winter 202 1

Any "G H" prefix course is applicable to GHP requirements. Below are those that medical students may find easiest to fit into your schedules. If you'd like to take a G H course that isn't listed, but for which medical students are eligible to register, you can apply up to 2 credits from those courses.

Winter 2021 non-clinical electives:

G H 502: Current Research and Programs in Global Health (1 CR/NC)
G H 543: Global Health Pharmacy: Medicine, Practice & Policy (2 CR/NC)
G H 590: Global Mental Health Research & Practice (1 CR/NC)

Completion of a Triple I (III) or another scholarly project is required of all medical students prior to graduation. GHP students must complete their scholarly project on an approved global health topic, or complete an alternative project /paper to fulfill this requirement.*

Students may meet this requirement in conjunction with GHIP, RUOP, SoD, or SoI (topic must be approved by GHP administrator and committee). GHIP is automatically approved. Other projects that may fulfill this requirement, subject to approval, include international projects, projects with topics that could apply to global populations, and domestic projects (i.e. RUOP) that focus on indigenous, immigrant, refugee, or migrant communities.

**Students who satisfied the III requirement prior to entering medical school can meet this requirement by working with GHP staff to propose an alternative project. The proposed project will be presented to the GHP committee for approval.

This should be a minimum four-week experience and can be met anytime during medical school in preclinical or clinical phases. It can take place in an international or domestic setting, provided that the population you are working with falls within a global health context. This requirement maybe met by completing a fourth year Global Health Clinical Elective (GHCE) or another experience that provides clinical exposure to a global population and issues. Students are responsible for working with clinical departments to arrange their own experiences, particularly preceptorships and clerkships.

Domestic (non-international) examples of this requirement include clinics that serve indigenous, immigrant, refugee, or migrant communities and are resource poor. Clinics that may qualify for the Pathway include, and are not limited to, SeaMar, Country Doctor, Migrant Farmworker Clinics, and the Seattle Indian Health Board. Check with the GHP manager to ensure your experience counts! RUOP and GHIP does not fulfill this requirement.

Minimum four-week International Experience that can be met anytime during medical school via one of the following:

a. Global Health Immersion Program (GHIP) — This program is for 1st year medical students.

b. Global Health Clinical Elective (GHCE) — Fourth-year clinical conjoint course that is self-funded.

c. Other Opportunities: Clinical Research overseas, an international public health project or another self-arranged international project to be approved by the GHP program administrator and committee. Scholarship of Discovery International Project also meets this requirement.

Involvement with a global health-focused group or project engaging in clinical or non-clinical activities with an underserved global/local population. Members of the GHP should complete at least two to three hours of service or community engagement per quarter.

Some examples include:

Participation in a service, service learning, or advocacy activity within the UW or the larger community, in either a volunteer or leadership role with a program that actively works to serve the local international community or other underserved populations (examples include SHIFA (Casa Latina, Rotacare, Aloha Inn), Community Health Advancement Program (CHAP), Health Equity Circle (HEC));
Active participation in planning or program development/management with the UWSOM Global Health Interest Group or Journal Club; serving on the Western Regional International Health Conference (WRIHC) planning committee;
Serving on a community board or taking on other leadership and advocacy roles with respect to underserved populations.
