Alumni Reception Draws a Crowd in D.C.

Salud! Department alumni gathered in Washington D.C. during a special alumni reception in conjunction with the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) conference earlier this month. Both faculty and staff joined the mingling and networking, which included appetizers and beverages from Buca de Beppo.

Many of the attendees were also presenting work or participating in the CUGH conference, and their experience-level ranged from undergraduates to physicians. Kudos to Julie Brunett for her excellent work organizing a fun and well-attended event.

2014 CUGH Conference Examines Sustainability of Global Health Programs

What happens when nearly 1,500 people who work or learn in global health convene in D.C.? We take a #selfie, of course! This year’s Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) conference brought together global health researchers, practitioners and students in Washington D.C., May 9-12 around the topic of Advancing Global Health in the Post-MDG Era. Attendees came from more than 50 countries, 208 universities, and 37% of attendees were students.

Congrats to Six Faculty, Staff and Students Who Received SPH Excellence Awards!

Six exceptional members of the Department of Global Health were honored at the 2014 School of Public Health Excellence Awards, which recognized and celebrated the outstanding achievement of staff, students, and faculty. All were acknowledged at the May 9th ceremony and they will also be recognized at the Department of Global Health Graduation Reception on June 11th. Department Will Play Key Role at Consortium of Universities for Global Health(CUGH) Conference

More than 1500 people from 50 countries will convene this weekend in Washington, D.C., around the topic of Universities 2.0: Advancing the Global Health Agenda in the Post-MDG Era. Both Department Chair King Holmes and Vice Chair Judith Wasserheit will introduce sessions, and Wasserheit has played a key role as Chair of the CUGH Board of Directors, Executive Scientific Program Committee and the CUGH Global Health Distinguished Leadership Award Committee. A total of 13 speakers are from the University of Washington.

UW Alum and Music Producer Ryan Lewis and His Mother Reveal Her HIV Status, Unveil HIV Campaign 30/30

University of Washington alum and music producer Ryan Lewis revealed last week that he and his mother have started a campaign to raise money to construct medical centers around the world. His mother, Julie Lewis, has been living with HIV for 30 years, something they stated publically for the first time as part of their effort to reduce stigma and raise support for 30/30, their new project. One week into their campaign, they had already raised $76,010 of their $100,000 goal.

UW Doctor Awarded Global Women's Health Fellowship

Dawn Kopp, an obstetrics and gynecology resident at UW Medical Center/Harborview Medical Center, was selected for the 2014 University of North Carolina (UNC) Global Women's Health Fellowship. The fellowship was created in March 2012 as a joint venture with University of North Carolina Department of Ob/Gyn and the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. Internationally known UNC faculty member, Jeff Stringer, will lead this division with sites in Malawi and Zambia.

New Center, KUSKA, Will Facilitate Multi- and Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Peru

Lima, Peru  --  The collaboration between the University of Washington and the University Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) became even stronger with the inauguration of a new center for interdisciplinary collaborations in global health at the UPCH campus. The KUSKA Center, named for the Quechua word “kuska” meaning “working together,” will serve as a catalyst for international collaborations that cross disciplines and institutions, with the objective of building teams working towards the same outcome – improved health and reduced inequalities.

High-level Delegation from China Visits Department of Global Health and UW

The Department of Global Health hosted a high-level delegation from Central South University (CSU) in Changsha, China, April 9-10. The delegation, led by the university’s Vice President and two Deans, visited the UW with the express interest of building an ongoing relationship with the Department of Global Health. While here, the delegation presented on current efforts by CSU to promote and build global health programs, and discussed potential areas of future collaboration between CSU and the Department.
