The Department of Global Health (DGH) is honored to welcome 45 new students to our community. Of the 45 students, six are joining the Pathobiology PhD program, nine are beginning their studies in the PhD in Global Health Metrics and Implementation Science program, and 30 are entering the Master of Global Health program.

Our 2024-2025 incoming global health leaders represent an international community of scholars with approximately 56% of new students joining us from countries outside of the United States. This year, we are proud to welcome students representing countries such as: Myanmar, Ghana, Mexico, Palestine, Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Rwanda, Nepal, China, South Sudan, Germany, Bangladesh, and Malawi.

World-renowned for its ground-breaking discoveries, research methodologies, and education and training programs, our students appreciate the interdisciplinary approach that the UW Department of Global Health offers.

Hailing from Rwanda, new MPH student and recipient of a DGH Teaching Assistantship, Christelle Urujeni Wa-Mana shares why she chose to pursue her studies at the UW Department of Global Health:

“I chose the Department of Global Health because I want to learn from the interdisciplinary approach that the faculty members use to combat global and domestic health issues. Furthermore, I was also attracted by the international partnerships, collaborations, and innovative values at the center of the research done at DGH. “

Other students like Prerana Shrestha (Pathobiology PhD), also value the department’s interdisciplinary learning approach and opportunities for collaboration:

“I chose the Pathobiology program under the Department of Global Health at UW for its interdisciplinary and collaborative approach, which is essential in global health research. Most of the faculty that I have interacted with have active collaborations with different institutes nationwide and globally. The program unites my background in translational research with my future goals in global health equity, so I am really excited to start!”

Shrestha, who was also awarded the prestigious Curci Foundation Scholarship, hopes to use her doctorate degree to address the heavy burden of infectious diseases in resource-limited settings like her home country of Nepal.

For new MPH students like Ricardo Moreno Garcia, recipient of the DGH Excellence Fellowship Award, the UW Department of Global Health not only provides a rich learning experience, but also fosters a welcoming environment where they feel supported in their academic endeavors:

“I got admitted to different MPH programs here at UW, but I decide[d] [on] global health since I feel the most support and help from this program and [they] make me feel so welcome and that I belong to this program!”

Upholding the department’s pursuit of #HealthforAll, these incoming students will use their knowledge, skillset, and lived experiences to tackle the most pressing global health topics of our time. From addressing causes of disease and health inequities at multiple levels to collaborating with global partners in communities around the world, our new cohort joins a legacy of students and faculty committed to achieving sustainable health outcomes on a global scale.

We proudly welcome our 2024-2055 students, and we can’t wait to see what you all accomplish!
