Women outlive men in 195 countries and in Russia they do so by 11 years. Ethiopians are living 19 years longer than in 1990 and people in the countries with the highest life expectancy live a staggering 34 years longer than those with the lowest.

These are just some of the findings from the BBC's life expectancy calculator, which uses data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). 

The GBD study is the world’s largest systematic, scientific effort to quantify the magnitude of health loss from all major diseases, injuries, and risk factors by age, sex, and population. IHME, an independent research center within UW Medicine and one of the Department of Global Health's key partners, serves as the coordinating center for the GBD study.
