Inspired by the Occupy Wall Street global movement, a group of faculty, staff and students from the University of Washington created a new collective called “Global 99” to look beyond the United States borders to the 99% around the world struggling for a more just global financial order. As global health advocates, members of Global 99 seek to highlight and act upon the growing health inequalities around the world.
At their inaugural event -- a teach-in in Foege Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 4 -- more than 100 people turned out to hear a panel of international students talk about inequity in their country. Global health students from Uganda, Nigeria, Sudan, and an American working in Haiti spoke, as well as a Humphrey fellow from Egypt who worked in the Egyptian government and was part of the Egyptian uprising. The audience shared their stories as well.
