The Centro de Investigaciones Tecnologicas, Biomedicas y Medioambientales (CITBM) is a pluripotent research consortium funded by the Peruvian Government to constitute the first Center of Excellence in Research, Development and Innovation in the country. The founding grant was awarded by the Peru’s National Council of Science, Technology and Technological Innovation in 2015 to implement collaborative research in Health, Biotechnology and Environmental Health. This consortium is led by the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), the first University in the Americas, with over 3,300 faculty members and over 43,000 graduate and post-graduate students. Other CITBM members include the University of Washington (UW) (USA), Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil), Instituto Nacional de Salud (Peru NIH), and several other national and international private and public institutions. Since its inception, the CITBM has been involved in ongoing clinical trials for prevention of infectious diseases like HIV, Zika, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), and COVID-19. Also, it has performed environmental studies about water pollution, and multidisciplinary intervention in the Peruvian amazon Region, in collaboration with the UW and other institutions.
