Adrienne Shapiro, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Global Health, Medicine (Infectious Diseases), and Epidemiology at the University of Washington. Her research spans the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment delivery for tuberculosis (TB) and HIV. Dr. Shapiro's primary research streams include: 1) TB prevention science (including case-finding, delivery of TB preventive therapy, and vaccines), with a priority focus on people living with HIV; 2) Screening and diagnostic innovations for TB, including non-sputum testing; 3) HIV prevention and care cascades, including biomedical prevention and vaccines. Dr. Shapiro partners with collaborators across global settings including South Africa, Kenya, Cambodia, and the United States, and applies methods including clinical trials, implementation studies, and observational epidemiology. She prioritizes research questions and approaches that address the disparities in access to diagnosis, prevention and good clinical outcomes for communities vulnerable to HIV, TB, and their sequelae.
Dr. Shapiro is co-director of the Translational Research Services sub-core of the UW/Fred Hutch CFAR, connecting patients with research opportunities and CFAR-affiliated investigators with clinical research participants, biorespository specimens, and community consultations to shape HIV research. She is a principal investigator at the Seattle Vaccine Trials Unit (VTU), a clinical research site affiliated with the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, leading clinical trials to develop novel HIV vaccines, broadly neutralizing antibodies, and long-acting PrEP, along with other prevention interventions for infectious diseases of global significance.
Dr. Shapiro is an attending physician at Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
