CFAR – “The impact of HIV on salivary antimicrobial peptides in Kenyan children”

This cross-sectional study will compare salivary antimicrobial peptide (AMP) levels in HIV infected and uninfected children, assess the association between AMPs and oral diseases, and assess the association between AMPs and serum vitamin D levels. The goal of the study is to perform vitamin D and AMP assessments of saliva samples collected in Kenyan HIV children. The study will provide data to inform the design of a randomized clinical trial of vitamin D supplementation to improve AMP responses in the oral mucosa and reduce oral inflammation and pathologies in HIV-infected children.
